ABSTRACT

Women are a class of human beings who have always been considered as objects. Male people are viewed as the pillars of society, so, naturally, the subject and superior position have been conferred upon them. From that position, they deliver their dictums regarding many issues, including the “Dos and Don’ts” for women also. Women do not even have the right to describe themselves. Every time they have been described from the point of view of other people, primarily men. Sexual violence should not be considered as an individual experience only. It should be taken as a means of analysing the oppression of the society. Fearing the social stigma, many women repress their experiences of sexual assault. While, on the one hand, society marks the rapist as “sick and a social aberration”, on the other, raped woman has been considered guilty for her own misery. “Consciousness-raising” regarding this oppression is necessary, and “speaking-out” should be the first step in the consciousness-raising process. Everyone should remember that an individual has the ability to change the society and can make history. Digital media like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Tumblr acts as a friend to a woman in sharing her personal experience of being sexually assaulted and abused. To protest against rape culture, misogynist concepts, this platform functions as an activist tool for women. This paper will make a list of various hashtag movements that have been spread through digital media. After thoroughly analysing various hashtag movements, this paper will try to figure out the importance of digital space in giving women an active platform to protest against various misogynist practices.
