ABSTRACT

Television is a tool of entertainment and recreation. We watch television to derive various gratifications like entertainment, education, information, advertisement, amusement, etc. There have been a plenty of studies investigating the social, cognitive, psychological impacts and effects of study. Generally, television viewing has been popularly hypothesised with attitudinal and cognitive consequences. In addition, there have been a several researches on information overloading in the digital era. Here, we propose the concept “Entertainment Overload” in Television channels raised due to the surfeit of entertainment content aired. The study intends to find the attitudinal impact of entertainment overloading in television channels on children. The variables amusement, knowledge, distraction and diversion, see others make mistakes, villains in action, boredom, fatigue, confusion, prime-time pressure, sense of loneliness, attention problems, sense of loss, analysis paralysis, aggressive behaviour, sound emotional development and resolve conflicts are taken for the study. A structured questionnaire is distributed among 200 samples from four districts of the state to find the cognitive impact of entertainment overload on children. The samples were of the age group 10-15. The respondents are selected using purposive sampling method.
