ABSTRACT

The new media age has changed the perspective of people’s inclination towards music in India. Media platforms like YouTube stock all the sundry versions of “unplugged” or “cover” songs by numerous artists. The surge is not because the versions are better, but rather cover songs associated with popular culture, which offers newness to the contemporary audience. In this context, the present study aims to discuss the reasons for folk music (in particular) that is on the rise. Analysis of the folk music is significant as India has a strong influence of its own regional music culture. At the pretext of cultural communication, the folk artist gets a chance to reach out to a new audience. Besides outlining the role of new media in boosting ‘unplugged’ folk music, the study also discusses a few folk artists and their songs, who gained the audience’s admiration within a short period.
