ABSTRACT

Utilizing Garcia et al.’s definition of servingness, this chapter provides a counternarrative to grit. After conducting a systematic review of the literature, this chapter discusses three main areas: expanding the meaning of servingness among Latinx/a/o students, cultivating a culture of care at Hispanic-Serving Institutions, and defining a counternarrative to grit. This chapter offers implications for practice for faculty and staff to shift the responsibility from students to institutions to better support the educational outcomes of Latinx/a/o students at Hispanic-Serving Institutions.
