ABSTRACT

This chapter considers how the success of the Moroccan men's national team (i.e., the Atlas Lions), which reached the semi-final of the men's 2022 FIFA World Cup, came to represent the Moroccan diaspora abroad. After tracing the historical and geographical roots of the diaspora it considers the impact the national team's success had on the diaspora. By drawing on media sources, social media activities, and individual accounts during the tournament and its immediate after the chapter illustrates how the Atlas Lions galvanized not only support from, but representation of the Moroccan diaspora and the larger North African and Arab diasporas. The chapter concludes by examining how the largely diasporic composition of the national team influenced the representation of transnational identities.
