ABSTRACT

This chapter offers an argument as to how rubrics can provide evaluation fidelity as well as opportunities for assessment. We describe the process we used to develop our public speaking (informative and persuasive speech) rubrics. Next, we discuss how to train instructors to use these rubrics consistently and reliably, how to provide feedback, and how to use that feedback to determine a score. Finally, we share how our rubric has evolved over time in our continuing efforts to increase evaluation fidelity for the benefit of instructors, students, and programmatic assessment.
