ABSTRACT

Online and mediated presentations are increasingly common forms of public speaking. Likewise, the need for online presentation skills in professional and political life grew dramatically in the early 2020s. This chapter provides background on and guidance for online and mediated forms of public speaking for speakers, instructors, and coaches. It begins with a brief introduction to the history of mediated public speaking. It then summarizes the research on speakers’ current digital communication skills and reviews the research on developing online public speaking skills. It concludes with suggestions for online speakers, online public speaking education, and future research on the subject.
