ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to provide an overview of the experiences and needs of parents of children on the autism spectrum. For this purpose, we will first provide insight into the particular challenges and needs of parents with children on the autism spectrum. Then we will address the increasing relevance of families’ perspectives and voices in the field of disability and how this change has led to the current understanding of what is the involvement of and the relationship between practitioners and researchers with these families in both practice and research. We will highlight ways and recommendations to include the voices of these families in research. We will then illustrate the needs and experiences of families with children on the autism spectrum in Spain through their voices using qualitative methodology. Finally, we will share some practical implications useful for the improvement of the support provision in families of children on the autism spectrum.
