ABSTRACT

What is the relationship between presence, body-ownership, agency, and awareness? How does this relationship affect the experiences users have within virtual reality? And how can we integrate existing knowledge about this relationship into the design of immersive museum exhibitions? This chapter provides answers to these questions based on a narrative review of 34 articles from psychology and philosophy, including articles that have historical value as well as contemporary empirical and theoretical research. The chapter also includes a consideration of how research from these fields applies to examples of recent immersive museum exhibitions.
