ABSTRACT

Haddix, Stevens, and Hinchman take the issue of cultivating equitable English language arts (ELA) practices head-on in this chapter about scholarship addressing Black students’ literacies and examples of pedagogies focused on equity for Black students. The chapter begins with a history of Black language and literacies, then describes current initiatives in Black literacies, including CREE, linguistic justice, and other antiracist efforts. The chapter ends with vibrant descriptions of speculative, activist, abolitionist, and Afrofuturist approaches for students and their teachers to invent equitable ELA practices.
