ABSTRACT

In this in-depth exploration of the power of language, Frey and Cabell begin with an examination of language development in young children, then discuss the two foundations of literacy development: listening skills and oral language development. The chapter includes oral exchanges between teachers and students to highlight the importance of allowing students to use their own words to solve problems—allowing them to talk instead of being talked to. The chapter continues with ways to teach language development across academic disciplines, with more oral exchanges to highlight how students can be taught to use different discourse styles in different academic settings. The chapter ends with an examination of how to integrate oral language and content knowledge, and the instructional design methods teachers can use to make that happen.
