ABSTRACT
In 1983, the Éditions Sociales published a new French translation of Volume 1 of Marx’s Capital (revised in 2016), realized by a team of translators led by Jean-Pierre Lefebvre. The new translation is in many ways technically more rigorous than the previously existing translation of Volume 1 by Joseph Roy and ‘entirely revised’ by Marx himself: this is not only due to an historical transformation of translation practices since the 19th century but also because it seeks to render with greater precision the philosophical dimension of Marx’s text and takes into account the most recent discussions concerning the Marxian conceptual framework. The object of our contribution is to compare these two French translations of Volume 1 of Marx’s Capital. Highlighting the contrasting choices in the translations, we wish to enable the reader to have a better understanding of the respective merits of these two texts.
