ABSTRACT

This chapter follows the evolutionary and speculative framework of the late nineteenth century and shows considerable theoretical sophistication for its temporal location. It speculates on two possibilities, the spontaneous origin of the Hindu trinity, collating it with the existence of similar trinities among many other religious belief systems across the world or to its connection to the Egyptian trinity of Isis, Osisis, and Horus. The Egyptian connection is traced to the evidence of active trade between India and the rest of the world civilizations of the Pre-Christian era, where it is now well established that Indian traders used the sea route to travel to several flourishing societies of that time, which includes Egypt.
