ABSTRACT

The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has triggered a historical and unprecedented economic shock, which has spread worldwide. The global energy sector emerges as one of the most affected ones by the pandemic. The lockdown measures implemented by governments caused a demand crisis for which the immediate effect has been to slow down the transition plans of many countries toward the adoption of renewable energies. This work reviews recent studies on the effect of the recent pandemic on the oil market and on the renewable energy sector highlighting both the challenges and the opportunities that are arising in the short and long term for the renewable energy sector.
