ABSTRACT

In Chapter 1, Mark Solms takes the bold position that Freud made two errors in The Ego and the Id. He believes that the problem which led Freud to propose the structural theory would be resolved better by assigning the function of consciousness to the id and by “distinguishing between the system Ucs. and the id”. Solms believes that it was incorrect for Freud to claim that all “sense impressions are conscious from the start”. He states that Freud made his claim on consciousness and perception from cerebral anatomy and gathers a large body of evidence from this field to show that Freud erred. He uses similar data to demonstrate what he describes as Freud’s second error.
