ABSTRACT

Jim Warren and Ralph Alan Cohen formed Shenandoah Shakespeare Express (SSE) in 1988. Initially a touring company, the SSE were invited to base themselves in Staunton, Virginia, and in 2001 they opened their Blackfriars Playhouse, a recreation of the second Blackfriars indoor theatre in London used by Shakespeare’s company the King’s Men, 1608–42. In 2005 the SSE became the American Shakespeare Centre (ASC). In this interview, Jim talks about his experience with SSE and the ASC, working in and with the Blackfriars theatre, and the future of theatre!
