ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the potential educational and social significance of Shakespeare North Playhouse to young people in Prescot. Drawing on the author’s empirical research and creative practice in theatre buildings in the UK, it explores some of the challenges and possibilities of engaging young people in theatre spaces. Rather than focusing on the potential of practices that engage young people in theatre as audience members and performers, it explores the ways in which the material qualities of Shakespeare North Playhouse may inspire story and connection. It argues for the increased importance of considering the social function of theatre buildings at this time and questions how we might expand what we consider creative and artistic usages of these spaces with communities.
