ABSTRACT

The chapter is an introduction to the creation of the Shakespeare North Playhouse in Knowsley. It begins with the historical links that the borough has with Shakespeare and continues with the writer’s description of her own links and childhood memories of Knowsley. She then tells the story of the journey the Shakespeare North Trust made towards the building of the playhouse, introducing the people, the organisations, the funding, and the local and national support which made the project possible. She explains that a major aim of creating this replica stage was to bring economic, social and educational regeneration to one of the most deprived boroughs in the UK.
