ABSTRACT

While academia is a rewarding career, the world of academia is fraught with obstacles and challenges. Academia has also traditionally been an autonomous career. Despite an ever-changing landscape in the 21st century, the path for females in academia is notoriously more difficult, as they must overcome sexist biases to succeed and be promoted to leadership positions. Additionally, the challenges faced by early career female academics can be different from the challenges encountered by their established counterparts. Due to this, community building, mentorship, strategies for self-care, and cultivating resilience in female academics are essential.

In this chapter, we will discuss numerous individual and collaborative strategies to build resilience in female academics. Our discussion will include dual perspectives: through the lens of the early career researcher and one from a more experienced female academic. Most strategies discussed are common, whereas others are unique to the specific stage of the academic’s career.
