ABSTRACT

The city of Hyderabad witnessed severe floods during the month of October, 2020 due to deep depression in the Bay of Bengal. Simultaneously heavy rainfall was reported from the states of Puducherry, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh. In Hyderabad the continuous torrential downpour resulted in loss of life and tremendous damage to property. Water levels in some neighborhoods reached 12 feet, with over 80 people having lost their lives and about 40,000 families being displaced. When the waters receded from areas, they left behind a trail of huge mounds of trash and mangled vehicles, and houses covered in mud and post-rain gathering up to 20,000 tons of waste. Standing crops in several parts of Telangana were also damaged. In the present study, the extensive damage caused due to the floods have been discussed along with the mitigation and management strategies to prevent as well as reduce the impact of floods.
