ABSTRACT

The experience shows that empowering community through family preparedness by networking of local resources is readily accessible and effective approach. It helps in addressing the local challenges in the right perspective.

The resilient village, enshrined in the Bihar Roadmap for Disaster Risk Reduction (2015-30), is focused on the community Based Disaster Risk Reduction (CBDRR) strategy towards the goal of disaster resilient Bihar. The Family preparedness initiatives of Disaster Management Department, Government of Bihar is one of the critical strategies of Community-based Disaster Risk Reduction (CBDRR).

Engaging local governance, female service providers (front line workers) and community leaders/volunteers to develop safe practices, preparedness for common emergencies to keep them safe and improves quality of their life. The local resources have good access and acceptability in the community. Capacity enhancement of PRIs, Anganwadi Workers (AWW of ICDS), Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA), local institutions & volunteers such as Self Help Groups (SHGs), women groups, Jeevika to develop as local resource pool (LRP) is the main strategies for enhanced resilience at community level and family preparedness. They have ample opportunity to contact them on a daily basis. The paper reviewed these initiatives in the light of empirical studies.
