ABSTRACT

Today the entire world is frequently facing disasters caused due to climatic changes and global warming. The reasons for their occurrence may be natural or man made but all over the world a need is felt for effective disaster management at all levels. Although the awareness of disasters has increased amongst some ports of the society, the aspects of disaster preparedness, prevention and response have not sufficiently been explored at the higher education level.

Higher education provides people with an opportunity to reflect on various social, financial, cultural issues facing humanity. Higher education is an important sphere in which the perspectives of planning for and implementation of disaster management aspects can be imbibed in an effective manner. It can build overall resilience through dissemination of specialized knowledge and skill and contribute to national development. As the higher education creates leaders, entrepreneurs and professionals of tomorrow, the inclusion of disaster management perspectives in various domains of higher education can go a long way to building resilience and managing disasters efficiently. The objective of this paper is to overview the disaster management perspectives covered in the higher education in India, to understand the scope for building resilience through dissemination of specialized knowledge and skills of disaster management perspectives in higher education and to study the challenges in implementing disaster management initiatives in higher education in selected countries.
