ABSTRACT

Globally, earthquakes result in a loss of about 50,000 lives every year. India is one of the ten worst disaster prone countries in the world due to its geo-climatic and socio-economic condition. During the last three decades, the country has been hit by 431 major disasters. India is highly vulnerable to earthquake and has experienced several severe earthquakes. The 1993 earthquake in Latur, Maharashtra and 2001 earthquake in Kutch, Gujarat have identified the vulnerability of modern Indian constructions to strong shaking. It also raised the concerns for Earthquake Risk Reduction (ERR) with mitigation and preparedness activities and effective post disaster recovery to build back better. The ERR and planned recovery strategies provide a sustainable solution for enhancing community resilience to meet the challenges of any future disaster.
