ABSTRACT

It is obvious like a lightning and shining day that the poorest people of the poor countries, societies, communities and poor villages are disproportionately affected by the disasters. The poverty increases the vulnerability of the people and makes the people more expose to the risk of potential hazard. The study areas that are situated in district Swabi, a district of KP, prone to the number of potential hazards like flood, earthquake, severe rainfall and other natural and man-made hazards. The objectives of the study were to know that why the poor are more vulnerable and suffer more severely from the impacts of disasters, what will be the risk reduction measures for sustainable development Four union councils with ten respondents from each village were selected by convenient method. Primary data was collected through interview and questionnaire After the analysis of data by SPSS, a number of results came out such as the people in the study area are either illiterate was merely studied the primary or middle education. 52.5% of the household earning comes from the farming. The assets particularly the agricultural land is more prone to the hazard. Furthermore, the area is prone to the number of disasters but according to the respondents, the frequency of flood is high and more damaging one. The study also shown that the disaster risk reduction activities, mitigation measures are hardly perceived in the study area and therefore, the people over there are suffering more severely particularly those of the poor, marginal people and vulnerable groups. So, it would be better to device DRR planning and sure their implementation along with poverty reduction in the study area in order to reduce the impacts of disaster over the people particularly those who are grinding in the poverty cycle and more vulnerable groups in a sustainable.
