ABSTRACT

Indian subcontinent is susceptible to different types of natural disasters and man-made crisis owing to the unique topographical & climatic characteristics, threat from international borders, lack of approach on disaster risk reduction through sustainable developments & innovations, inadequate commitment towards environment protection etc. The occurrence of Disasters along with the losses over the years is increasing on account of larger population being exposed to natural hazards. In order to reduce such losses, it is necessary to capture, organise, share & disseminate disaster related knowledge, information and experiences across utility, organisation, society, country to convert the shared knowledge into requisite actions for mitigation of Disaster or elimination of hazards.

Capacity in Disaster-Management is the extra-ordinary strengths, qualities, special skill, intelligence, and wisdom, necessary to effectively handle Crisis & Emergency situations. Capacity building is a systematic ongoing process to develop, galvanise special skill, knowledge & strength amongst the peoples across organisation, society, community, country so that they are sensitized and can apply the knowledge prudently for quick recovery from crisis situation. Electricity is vital commodity of present society and to secure uninterrupted electricity services till last mile consumer, even in major disaster, Disaster resilient Power infrastructure leveraging latest science/technology with prognosis for sustainable development & environment friendly initiatives are vital in this sector.

CESC, the oldest Power utility in India experienced various disaster/crisis situation over decades including recent past and using past learnings, undertook Capacity enhancement initiatives in different front through proper knowledge management & networking with its stakeholders. Such actions over the years helped CESC to transform into a Disaster Resilient Power utility in India.
