ABSTRACT

The frequency and the severity of natural disasters have been increasing because of climate change that poses a growing threat to life and livelihood of the people. The situation in Bangladesh is no different in this regard. According to Global Climate Risk Index 2021, Bangladesh is the 7th most vulnerable countries in the world to climate change. Almost every year Bangladesh experiences different types of natural disasters such as flood, cyclone, tidal bore, and drought and so on because of her geographical location and climate change. Among the natural disasters, flood occurs frequently in Bangladesh and adversely affects the lives and livelihood of the affected community. But to what extent the people of the affected community are resilient to flood? This paper is an attempt to analyze the resilience of the flood affected people. In doing so, a study was carried out by applying mixed method approach and findings have been presented in this paper. The findings show that the individual households of the study area adopt a variety of indigenous mechanism to resist and cope with catastrophic situation created by flood. The nature of mechanisms is influenced by a variety of socioeconomic factors, for example, income and gender norms. In spite of adopting various types of indigenous mechanisms the people of the study area are not resilient enough to overcome the situation because of their poor socioeconomic condition.
