ABSTRACT

The global issue of rapid urbanisation and its related problem can be addressed judiciously with the help of the concept of ‘Green Infrastructure’ in the planning process of any country. The term ‘Green Infrastructure’ refers to an energy-efficient, ecofriendly infrastructure that can reduce air pollution, energy consumption, and enhance the quality of urban amenities, standard of living and ultimately promote economic and environmental sustainability.

India’s urbanisation is characterised by densely populated urban centres where more than 30% (as per 2011 Census) of Indian population is living. The transformation from rural centric agriculture-based economy to unban centric industrial economy accelerated continuous rural to urban migration that caused shortage of land, uneven distribution of several urban amenities for urban dwellers. As a result, Indian cities developed haphazardly in an unplanned manner.

Shortage of green finance, less awareness, improper policy implementation, overpopulation are the main hindrance in the way of achieving ‘Green City’. This paper is trying to focus on the opportunities and challenges related with promotion of Green Infrastructure in Indian Cities.
