ABSTRACT

This chapter gives a brief overview of eating disorders with an update on the changing epidemiology associated with COVID-19 and the possibility of emerging new diagnoses such as orthorexia and Type 1 diabetes with disordered eating (T1DE). It also considers the comorbid diagnoses that may exist alongside an eating disorder, including neurodevelopmental disorders (autism spectrum disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), anxiety, and mood disorders. The chapter also summarises the current status of our understanding of risk factors that can precipitate, predispose, and perpetuate the development of an eating disorder. Finally, it briefly considers how to target treatment strategies on these problems.
