ABSTRACT

Corporate sustainability has not produced the expected results to address the climate crisis and, in fact, carbon emissions and other greenhouse gases continue to accumulate in the atmosphere. Earth’s average global temperature has already increased by nearly 1℃, and research suggests that we are on track for a total increase between 2.5℃ to 3.2°C, well beyond the 1.5°C increase by 2030 goal that scientists set as the threshold to avert severe consequences. Businesses have used economic science to guide sustainability decision making and have become mired in business-centred sustainability, or business as usual with incremental improvements, a form of weak sustainability. But weak business-centred ‘sustainability’ is a misnomer and is not sustainable at all. Weak business-centred sustainability only masks and prolongs unsustainability. The only solution to the climate crisis and to save humanity is to move business, industry and society towards strong sustainability.
