ABSTRACT

This chapter will suggest that to understand how individuals can help their organisation productively respond to the daunting challenges posed by climate change, one needs to view the organisation as a complex adaptive socio-technical system (CAST). We will explain what a CAST is and explore the climate leadership implications of a systems view for organisations, advancing in the process a set of practical insights and action steps that can be taken by organisational actors interested in showing leadership on this issue. An important starting point is to help everyone in the organisation understand the systems of which they are a part and the goals and purposes of their organisation within that system. In addition, organisational climate leaders must help to align sub-systems with the goals of the organisation and, by extension, the larger systems of which it is a part and understand that doing so may necessitate the sub-optimisation of certain parts of the organisational system. To achieve this difficult task, organisational climate leaders will need to demonstrate how aligning the organisation with the larger natural systems it depends on creates value for the organisation and its constituents.
