ABSTRACT

This chapter chronicles the last 20 years of environmental and sustainable leadership thinking to identify trends and future directions. Leadership is a socially constructed phenomenon, shaped and defined by the context and environment in which it is enacted. Through times of uncertainty and challenge, good or effective leadership should move us forward, creating new and needed capacity and insight; good leadership must invite us into the difficult work of navigating the ambiguity of fundamental change. Organisations should clearly delineate between management and leadership. Leadership professional development must be a strategic investment and not just for senior or middle management. Unlocking the full potential of leadership behaviour within an organisation requires that everyone understand that they have access to it and ensuring that the organisational culture and structure is built around this belief as opposed to paying lip service to it.
