ABSTRACT

The Analysis of variance (ANOVA) technique tackles essentially the same problem as the t-test but, instead of being limited to dealing with the difference between two sample means, there is no restriction on the number of means among which differences may be examined. ANOVA is the method most often used for analysing data from a classical experiment, in which one or more independent variables (IVs) are controlled at a small number of values and a dependent variable is observed at each combination of the IV values. The IVs, on the other hand, are usually referred to as factors. Factors are either fixed or random. An interaction effect exists when the pattern of differences among levels of one factor is different at the various levels of one or more other factors.
