ABSTRACT

This chapter seeks to reflect on the scholarly opportunities afforded to future researchers on the basis of the current state of scholarship on European medieval and Renaissance political thought. It identifies lacunae and limitations in the latter that the author considers to be in need of redress. Some of these are of a technical nature, such as the need for more textual editing and translations. Others of them are more attitudinal, like reticence to engage in collaborative research (especially of a cross-disciplinary nature) and the fear of drawing conclusions about contemporary theoretical problems from one’s studies. The intervention is intended to be suggestive rather than definitive. It is meant to serve as a rough guide to a few avenues that the author observes are available, indeed, cry out for further investigation. In this sense, the chapter sometimes adopt a loosely polemical tone, in the hope that other scholars will be stimulated to pursue the challenges that are posed.
