ABSTRACT

This chapter analyzes dialogically Romanian and Latvian constitutional identity by focusing on the concept of eternity clause in the respective constitutional discourses. Drawing on the Lacanian concept of agalma, as a starting point for a mutual endeavour of discussing the concept eternity clause, we aim to present and reflect on the eternity clauses as a mirror towards the constitutive core of constitutional identity. We do so by exploring both the form and the content of eternity clauses first in Romania, and then in Latvia with a view to unearth and underline the historical contextual traces that have marked constitutional discourse until these days.
