ABSTRACT

This case study of Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens in Pittsburgh, the United States, begins by reviewing wider thinking on the transformations that are needed to tackle the climate crisis. It draws on the work of Carol Sanford to provide a framework for the journey that Phipps has been on, to move from aiming to be “less bad” to the planet, through “doing good” to its current mode of “regenerative thinking” which aims to add value to all living systems. The author then describes practical examples of building projects and organization-wide initiatives which have led to numerous awards for sustainability.
