ABSTRACT

Tackling climate change is a global challenge requiring all countries, cities and communities to work together. Museums in the UK are firmly committed to reducing their carbon emissions in line with the Paris Climate Agreement to limit global warming to no more than a 1.5℃ rise on pre-industrial levels. There is widespread recognition in the sector that reaching this ambition is non-negotiable, and although the road to achieving it poses various difficulties, complications and costs, it is essential for the survival of the planet.

The obstacles that face the museum sector have made change difficult, but not impossible. As outlined in this chapter, the efforts of museums and the dedicated people who work in them are starting to create momentum, and the difficulties the sector faces from funding models, long-standing infrastructure issues and the challenges created by the buildings and assets museums occupy and care for are beginning to be addressed.
