ABSTRACT

Working as extension faculty within a Planning department at a land-grant institution, we experience the synergies that exist between the outreach work tied to community development and the research and teaching in the planning program. Having a formal working arrangement between Extension and the planning department at ISU has added significant value to both units. The quality of teaching, research, and outreach has been positively impacted and that serves as a major strength for the planning department. We recommend this framework at other land grant and non-land grant institutions to better address important planning and community issues by drawing from the collective strengths of both units.
