ABSTRACT

This chapter is a case study illuminating a university-community project that engaged students working collaboratively with a non-profit organization on an adaptive reuse project, the historic Millsaps Hotel, located in Hazlehurst, Mississippi. The primary objective of the project was for students to advance their scholarship by engaging with the community, sharing knowledge, integrating planning expertise with residents’ historical knowledge and lived experiences, and co-producing suggestions and proposals for repurposing the Millsaps Hotel. The team approached the work with conjoint foci that observed adaptive reuse architecture and the scholarship of engagement.
