ABSTRACT

Canada is located on unceded Indigenous territories. Indigenous communities and governments are increasingly asserting their rights not just on reserve lands but also in their broader territories. As a result, it is important for planners to understand First Nation, Métis and Inuit rights and practices in relation to lands management, and to build their capacity to work with First Nations and other Indigenous governments and organizations (Porter and Barry 2016; Canadian Institute of Planners 2019). The University of Manitoba's Indigenous Planning Studio provides a starting place for emerging planners to understand the colonial roots of professional planning, to develop new planning practices and to learn about Indigenous planning practices through partnerships with First Nations.
