ABSTRACT

Educators need to become nimble with online assessment practices as education is increasingly provided in online, blended, and hybrid formats. This chapter presents a study that sought to gain insight into the experiences of preservice teachers with assessment practices while they were learning online. A 17-item survey that included both Likert scale and open-ended questions was completed by 73 participants in Years 1 through 4 of a Bachelor of Education program in Alberta, Canada. The results showed that the preservice teachers often felt overwhelmed, confused, and frustrated because the foundational principles of quality assessment—clear criteria, feedback, and evidence of learning—were not readily transferred from in-person learning to online settings. This chapter is informative for preservice teacher educators and anyone teaching online as a reminder of how quality assessment principles are relevant and necessary in online learning platforms.
