ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the development, status, and role of the New Federation Board and CONIFA as an alternate organization of football internationally. The motives of territories such as Denmark, Monaco, Sámi in northern Scandinavia, Turkish Cypriots, Abkhazia, South Ossetia, Székely Land, and Iraqi Kurdistan are analyzed. CONIFA’s intent to be apolitical and serve international football teams from nations, de facto nations, regions, minority peoples, and sports-isolated territories is questioned. The chapter discusses the implications of Russia’s occupation of the Donbass on alternative football in Europe, as well as the broader cultural representation and political aims of territories participating in alternative football.
