ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the conjunctural politics of the FIFA Men’s World Cup 2026 in the United States, Mexico, and Canada in order to contextualize the event within the broader historical and cultural conjuncture. The discussion focuses on the external politics of FIFA Men’s World Cup 2026 as they relate to global political economic forces and relations in combination with, or in confrontation of, local interests and national political agendas. Three primary features of the event are detailed: a promise of political unity, a magnitude of economic certainty, and an unprecedented commercial opportunity. The chapter concludes by discussing how the FIFA Men’s World Cup 2026 relates to sport’s burgeoning geopolitical economy.
