ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the European Super League in 2021, as part of the debate about the privatization of professional sports. The discussion points to the need for new content to drive the sports market and the appeal to some club owners of the United States’ organizational sports model. UEFA’s attempts to balance the needs of rich clubs and poor clubs are discussed, including changes to payments to clubs and allocations from media rights. The chapter details the 2020 and 2021 European Super League discussions, announcements, and reactions. It concludes with the negative repercussions of the 2021 attempt to create the European Super League, the continued reforms of UEFA club championships, and the likely continued privatization of sport and football.
