ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the geopolitics of the Formula 1 race calendar and questions the potential trade-offs between the values of the sport and financial interests. The discussion points to the evolving – and perpetually expanding – race locations of the Formula 1 calendar being potentially driven by a variety of factors, including the sport property’s principal sponsors or partners, and at the direction of changing Formula 1 ownership. The chapter examines the motives and implications of the race locations in Europe, China, Russia, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and the USA. It finds that the determination of the Formula 1 race calendar is highly illustrative of the interplay between geography, politics, and economics.
