ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the relationship between Formula 1 motorsport, the oil industry, and race host countries. The analysis questions Formula 1’s reliance on oil, the controversies related to this relationship, and the prospects to embrace electric and lower carbon footprints. The discussion details the oil, tobacco, and other industries that have funded the sport, as well as the numerous cities and countries that have attempted to host one or more races. The chapter highlights the role of state-backed races, free-to-air television coverage to navigate financial difficulties for the sport, and the potential of clustering races together in the future.
