ABSTRACT

This chapter assesses the legal status and the depth of management dysfunctions and politicization of the activities of international sports bodies as a result of the war in Ukraine. It examines the varying responses by the international sports bodies and the related legal challenges, within the context of world sports governance structures. A number of dysfunctions in the international configurations are highlighted, and the case of Russian and Belarusian sports is discussed. The chapter concludes with the implications of a lack of completely independent external mechanisms for implementing, monitoring, and sanctioning governance issues and the argument for co-regulation.
