ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we explore a technology-based approach to teaching English prosody designed to enhance ESL students’ proficiency in bilingual higher education. While these students are often proficient in written English, research indicates that they require assistance with the spoken aspects of the language. Regrettably, the speaking courses offered by universities do not provide enough opportunities for students to improve their English prosody, which is essential for effective verbal communication. To address this issue, a groundbreaking English prosody app has been designed and initially implemented to cater to the students’ prior prosodic characteristics and needs. The app is founded on an L2 discourse intonation framework, which covers the fundamental principles of English prosody and offers practice on the intrinsic connections between prosodic forms and pragmatic functions that are critical for successful communication. In this framework, the chapter concentrates on English rhythmical patterns, necessary prosodic abilities for ESL students in L2, and bilingual education. By utilizing this digital tool, we plan to enhance the oral communication skills of L2 English speakers and prepare them for success in international settings. The initial results of a pilot study demonstrate the app’s effectiveness.
