ABSTRACT

Humans are social animals who thrive when they collaborate toward mutually shared goals. Specifically, humans succeed when they work as allies. That same point is easily transferable to any discussion around innovation, ideation, or brainstorming. Thinking about diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) as being a foundational element associated with successfully deployed innovative solutions, it shouldn't be surprising to learn that DEI is strongly considered when potential employees are evaluating a prospective organization. Additionally, many individuals leave organizations because behaviors, actions, and practices do not reflect that an organization has truly embraced DEI as a recurring theme throughout all elements of the organization. This chapter answers the ever-important “why” allies are essential to reducing medical technology risk. Creating an ally model can feel like drinking from a firehose. There are so many ways to go about it and all may seem important. At the heart of establishing a model is creating a culture that values and prioritizes allyship.
