ABSTRACT

In South Africa, at present, there are many young people performing in various public spaces, in and around the urban surroundings. They perform in shows, at concert halls and in theatre spaces, where indigenous music previously had no presence. Now they bring the indigenous sound closer to the city space. This research examines the role played by young, indigenous performers in inspiring aspirant music students keen to become specialist players in indigenous instruments, particularly at institutions of higher learning. These young performers are able to assist these burgeoning musicians when they are invited as guest speakers at seminars and in presenting their work as guest speakers and experts on indigenous music performance at various institutions of higher education. Through these avenues, they can inspire students and share their insights with scholars.
