ABSTRACT

In recent times, it is becoming increasingly popular to come across bilingual education approaches as dual language (DL) programs that use more than one language to teach core academic subjects and language. Studies have been conducted to assess the effectiveness of such programs and the factors that influence them. These studies have revealed evidence of the overall effectiveness of these programs, as well as the various factors that can impact student learning. This chapter focuses on DL programs that provide instruction in subject matter using at least two languages, with one being the majority language and the other being the partner language. The emphasis is on programs that use the partner language for academic instruction from primary grades up through elementary and secondary school. These programs can be found in various communities worldwide and are commonly referred to as dual language education or dual language programs. Policymakers and educators can use research into these programs to make well-informed decisions on how best to create successful DL programs.
